Haute Couture clothing is made to measure for a woman when she orders from a sample of a specific style shown in Paris at the Haute Couture Collection. Ready-to-Wear (Prêt-à-Porter), as opposed to Haute Couture, is just that: ready to wear. These fashions may need alteration, but are immediately available to any customer who wishes to buy them. Only certain fashion houses are allowed by law to use the term Haute Couture. They must present to the press in Paris twice a year a collection of a minimum of 50 pieces, for day and evening. The collection must be made in their own workrooms with 20 or more workers, and they must show the collection in-house, in dedicated salons. CHANEL Boutiques and various department and specialty stores carry Ready-to-Wear fashions. Haute Couture clothing is produced in the workrooms of CHANEL in Paris, and the samples travel to the U.S. twice per year : usually to New York (by appointment only). There are six collections produced by Karl Lagerfeld each year, which are shown in Paris. — January: Spring/Summer Haute Couture Collection — March: Autumn/Winter Ready-to-Wear Collection — June: Ready-to-Wear Cruise Collection — July: Fall/Winter Haute Couture Collection — October: Spring/Summer Ready-to-Wear Collection — December: High Summer Collection

Mademoiselle Chanel revolutionized women’s fashion with inventions such as trousers for women, the little black dress, the tweed suit, the two-tone shoe and the first shoulder bag. For a comprehensive outline of the highlights and important breakthroughs in both Coco Chanel’s life and that of the corporation that bears her name, please visit “Inside CHANEL” at Inside CHANEL.

Karl Lagerfeld, Artistic Director of CHANEL Haute Couture, Ready-to-Wear and Accessories, joined CHANEL in 1983, 12 years after Mademoiselle Chanel passed away in 1971. Karl Lagerfeld has adopted Goethe’s famous motto: “Build a better future by expanding on elements of the past.” At CHANEL he has changed nothing and everything, interpreting CHANEL in his own way with elegance and wit. He would have certainly met Mademoiselle’s approval, since her ideas also often created mini-revolutions before becoming the industry standard.
